Bad WebQuest

This is an example of a webquest that needs improvement:

The webquest is designed to guide students through an investigation of WWII battles. The initial idea to look closer at the details for the different battles is good. However, the webquest presents a few changes I would have to make before it could be used in a classroom. The webquest isn't written for the students to read unless it's meant to be in third person to them, which webquest aren't. Also, the webquest doesn't have a strong opening setting to draw the student in.

The webquest does have the standard webquest components. The introduction consisted of a video. I didn't agree with the video having a disclaimer and 7 minutes is long for an opening hook clip. I would remove the disclaimer and choose a segment that is informative and appropriate for everyone. The webquest states the task with steps. The process is also stated but the reader doesn't get to see what this worksheet each group is going to get. Also, it doesn't tell the students how long they have to complete creating a 10-15 minute presentation. There is also a quiz included in the webquest that I don't think should be in the quest at all. The quiz has odd questions about a few of the battles and the students already have useful worksheet to fill out. Also, even though there is a teacher page section there is barely anything on it. The process and resource page are blank.

A couple of positive things are the colors work. Also, under task at the bottom there is a good website link for students to preview before moving to the process. Then the links for the process all work and include images and readings. The first link under tasks is very useful but under utilized.

The webquest is not a total wash and with some changes could be a useful tool. The links provided are good and I think the overall idea of breaking up the battles to look closer at them is a useful strategy.

  1. I like this webquest I think it is interesting and I think that students would enjoy getting involved with the project by taking different roles in WWII such as a general or a civilian. I liked the websites that were offered but I am not sure if students would want to do so much reading. The teacher page could also use more information though.

  2. I found this webquest interesting, however I do enjoy reading about WWII. I like the concept of it and thought it was well laid out. Although it lacks some direction I feel it gives the instructor an opportunity to create their own standards of time limits as it suits the individual class. I agree that the color scheme is nice and that the resources all working are a bonus. Considering that lately a lot of the webquest I've come across have broken links. Nice find.

  3. I enjoy how this WebQuest starts out with a clip, as it drags the students into the setting easier than having them read, as that may be a turn off. The color scheme and the link color hurt my eyes a little bit. I think Derek's grade level is too broad, as he created this for all high schoolers. The teacher process page is completely blank, and I thought the student conclusion page was lacking.

  4. I agree with Alanna that perhaps the level/amount of reading may be too high. most students should be drawn in immediately on the subject of war and find the webquest relatively more interesting than lecture or texts

  5. I dig this webquest! I think it is laid out very well, and I do not think it is too much information to read in preparation. I like the intro---an embedded video is a nice touch! It is a serious project time-wise, with a whole day to research the topics. Maybe too much time. I think students would get into this activity for sure.
